What is a modifier?
If you want to create options to remove, add or change your menu items, this is where you create and attach modifiers, also known as variants or options by some POS systems. You can attach different modifiers and modifier groups to each menu item. You can also attach the same modifier or modifier group to multiple items.
Modifier example below. The modifier group is called "Remove" and some of the modifiers are "No Cheese" or "No Bread". You can allow customers to add, remove or modify their menu items through modifiers.
You can also use modifier groups for cooking styles such as well done, medium, medium-rare and blue; or scrambled, fried and poached. You will need to add all your modifiers into the modifier database before linking them to your menu items.
How to create modifiers
- Add modifiers to the modifier database.
- Create modifier groups.
- Link/add modifiers to a modifier group.
- Rearrange modifiers and modifier groups.
1. How to add modifiers to the modifier database
- Go to Your Menu > Modifiers.
- Click Create new modifier.
-
Modifier Name: type in the name that will appear to customers.
- If it's a modifier that removes something from the item, for example, you want to give customers the option to remove bacon or onion from their burger, you would name it “Remove bacon” or “Remove onion”.
- If its a modifier that adds something to the item, you would name it “Add bacon” or “Add onion”.
- Display Price: write the price as you would like it to appear on the menu. For example, "2.0". This is what the customer will see on the menu. If you want a dollar sign to appear, include one, however, psychologically dollar signs are proven to reduce sales.
- Price in Cents: make sure you multiply the price by 100 and there should be no decimal, so if the price was $2.00 you would enter 200. If it's $10.55 you would enter 1055. This is what the customer will be charged.
-
External POS Group ID and External POS ID: this is required if your venue is POS integrated.
2. How to create a new modifier group
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items.
- Find the item you want to edit and click to open it.
- Click View item modifiers and upsells.
- Click Add new Modifier Group.
- Name the group. For example, "Remove", "Add", etc.
- Select Type should be multi so customers can select more than one item on the list.
- Select whether a selection is required or optional by the customer.
- Select Display Options whether the list of modifiers would be Collapsed, Expanded or Hidden.
- Collapsed: A drop list occurs when this option is selected. It is ideally used to make the menu item look neater. It can be selected when selecting dietary requirements.
- Expanded: A visible list where the customer can choose what they want and select from the relevant options.
- Hidden: The modifier is hidden from the menu but is visible when the receipt has been printed in the kitchen. Commonly used for set menus.
For a group to be hidden, a modifier must be required and have a single selection. - For Ordering Type, this filters which ordering type you would like the modifier group to appear. Select dine-in if you want it to appear in the dine-in ordering type only. Leave it blank if you want it to appear in all ordering types.
- For External POS ID, if you have a POS integration you need to put the ID group name in, otherwise, leave it blank.
- Click Create.
- Add modifiers to your group by typing them into the add modifier section under your new group and selecting the modifier when it appears.
- Check the details are correct, especially the price.
3. How to add a new modifier to an existing modifier group
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items.
- Find the item you want to edit and click on the menu item text to open it.
- Click View item modifiers and upsells.
- Type in the name of your new modifier where is says add modifier next to the search icon.
- If you have already added the modifier to the modifier database, then it should appear when you search the item.
- Select the item, and check that details such as the price are correct.
- If the modifier does not appear, you need to go and add it to the modifier database. The new modifiers should have their corresponding PLU codes and Group IDs which can be obtained from your POS. If you have added it but don't see it yet, try refreshing the page.
4. How to rearrange modifiers and modifier groups for menu items
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items.
- Find the item you want to edit and click to open it.
- Click the view item modifiers and upsells (located at the top).
- Click the Position button in the top corner.
- Click and drag the three lines next to the modifiers to move them within their groups.
- Click the three lines next to modifier groups to move them around between the groups.
- Click the Position button again to save the changes.
How to edit your modifiers
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items.
- Find the item you want to edit and click on the menu item text to open it.
- Click on View item modifiers and upsells.
- If you want to edit a modifier click the pen and pad icon next to the modifier you want to change.
- Change the name of your modifier by typing it into the Modifier Name section.
- Change the price by changing the display price, that the customer sees, and the price in cents which is what charges the customer.
- Display Price is what the customer will see, so if it was 2 dollars you would write $2.00.
- Price in Cents is what the customer will actually be charged. You need to multiply it to 100 then remove the decimal point to convert the price to cents. Therefore, you would write 200 if the price was $2.00.
